EEND679 Tech Assessment Artifacts

1) 3rd-4th Grade Recorder Unit Assessments:
I chose the following artifacts to showcase here because they are artifacts that I will definitely be using in the upcoming school year. I loved designing these artifacts! In designing these materials, I was inspired to create additional resources to use in other grade levels throughout the upcoming year. I hope you enjoy them!

I designed the first three artifacts with the intent to use them in my 3rd and 4th grade classes during our recorder units of study. For our recorder units, I use the Recorder Karate learning platform. In this learning platform, students earn recorder belts like they would karate belts for playing songs with varying levels of difficulty. The assessment piece of this platform focuses primarily around summative playing assessments. To measure student progress throughout the unit, I have had to add in primarily informal formative assessment pieces such as partner playing observation and individual student checks. The curriculum currently lacks a self-assessment portion. So these assignments provided a great opportunity for me to create some student self-assessments and reflections on learning, which I normally do not provide in my lessons. In designing these tools, I feel like I have a better grasp of how to structure assessments throughout their recorder unit and feel like students will have more ownership over their learning with these assessment tools.

2) Digital Student Portfolios:
I included this artifact because it was something that I was really proud of after I created it. In Module 6, I discovered a NEW Google Sites Easy Student Portfolio* YouTube video on how to create a student digital portfolio using Google Sites. While I am somewhat familiar with Google Sites, I had never really figured out how to incorporate it into my teaching for students. As a K-5 general music teacher, I have been searching for several years on a way for students to showcase their learning from the beginning of their music study to the end when they leave elementary school. Over the years students have created many cool projects, but have not had a way to document them. Usually I recorded their projects and then input them into a WeVideo or iMovie, which I then showed to the class. The only time parents ever really saw what was going on in music class was at Open House through these videos. When I found this video link that shows step-by-step how to create a Google Site from a student perspective, I was hooked, and finally found a solution to my problem! So here is what I created using the video tutorial. I can't wait to use it with my students!

Class Reflection

How Have I Grown?
I really enjoyed taking this class. While I have always known about formative and summative assessments, this class has taught me how to think about those in a deeper way. I feel like I finally understand the difference between the concept of assessment "for" learning and assessment "of" learning. I feel like the class resources and assignments have been extremely beneficial in helping me design assessments that I can actually USE in my classroom. During this class I focused on designing assessments to go along with my 3rd and 4th grade units primarily. In designing these I feel like I now have a basis upon which to move forward designing assessments for other grade levels.

This class really made me think about student self-reflection and how little I have been using it in my classroom. Now that I have had the chance to design self-reflection and self-assessments for students, I feel like I can utilize these more in my classroom. Before I never felt like I deliberately planned for formative assessment in my classroom; it was very informal. Most of my assessments were summative in nature; however, now that I have had the opportunity to research and reflect on the different tools for formative assessments, I feel like I will be planning these more effectively in the future.

An obstacle that I have always had in my classes is time. Therefore, it was hard to assess students on a regular basis. This class has taught me how technology can enhance assessments for students and provide efficient feedback that I can actually use to plan learning activities. Previously I have been overwhelmed at the data piece because I teach all of the students in the school, and have little time to use the data to plan instruction. I feel like in taking this class I now have an effective way to use data to plan instruction.

Moving into next school year will definitely be challenging. There are many obstacles that we will have to overcome as teachers. I am thankful that I have had the chance to learn new ways of managing student learning through technology for the upcoming year. I have a feeling that many of us will be relying heavily on technology one way or another, whether we are learning in person or remotely in the fall. Who knows?
